New Year's Resolution: Promises are Promises

Every start of the year people make the craziest promises aiming to change themselves in 365 days. They list down things that they want to do or improve and most of them are simple like, buy new pillow, get new haircut, and adopt new pet, or get new toothbrush. Others aim high and go for the things like, lose 100 pounds, get a new job, learn a new skill, become rich and famous. Some do happen, but unfortunately most of them don't.

Why is that?

Simple, we have been setting the wrong goals every time. We have been so unspecific about our aims that we forget the basics, the stepping stone to reach it. Have you ever considered starting small?

For example, most people, about 60% of the current population is seeking to improve their health and wellness. It is easy to say, “I will burn my plumps and turn it into the abs,” or “I will eat healthy foods.” But in the following days you haven’t done anything for that goal and most likely you have already crossed that out on your list and replaced by a new one.

“People can’t fly towards their mountains,” my teacher once told me. “We have no wings,” he added.
We can only reach the “top” by building a stepping stone. Going back to the example, you can just write down a new training regimen or a new diet plan. “Go to gym with dad next Tuesday for 30 minute jogging and 15 minute weight training,” or “Eat vegetable salad and drink tea for brunch instead of buying burger.”

Another is, you are not motivated to make a change. You are pushing yourself to do what your mind doesn't want to do. How long have you been that kind of person you are now? Maybe more than a year or two. So changing it in a short span of time may be quite difficult if you don't have the right inspiration to push you with.

Having a good social support system is great for someone who wants to change. You can have a friend, a family member, and a pet to help you or even do it with you. Let them be your inspiration and be their inspiration.

What is good with having someone that cares about you is that they can point out your behavior. Our mind becomes lazy sometimes that we don't even see that we are not following our list anymore. A slap on the back may be just what you need in times of desperate transformation.

Take it one day at a time that way you can do things slowly but surely. You have 365 days to do that and maybe more if you keep doing it for the rest of the year.

I hope we all have a great 2015.
